Strom Thurmond represented South Carolina in the U.S. Senate from 1956-2003. He previously served a separate period in the U.S. Senate, as Governor of South Carolina, and in the South Carolina State Senate. He identified as a Republican but identified as a Democrat before 1964. He died in 2003.
